Bangladesh vs Vietnam vs India: An Honest Apparel Sourcing Comparison (2026)

The three giants of Asian apparel manufacturing, compared without spin — cost, capacity, product strengths, compliance and lead times — so you can match the country to your programme.

Bangladesh, Vietnam and India are the three pillars of Asian apparel manufacturing. Each is genuinely excellent at different things. The mistake brands make is treating “cheapest per piece” as the whole question — the better question is which country fits each product in your range.

We’re based in Bangladesh, so we’ll be upfront about that. But a comparison that just says “Bangladesh wins everything” would be useless to you and untrue. Here’s the honest version.

Cost

Bangladesh holds the lowest labour cost of the three, which is why it dominates high-volume basics and knitwear where labour is a big share of the garment. Vietnam has higher labour costs but very high efficiency and strong materials access, so its total cost is competitive on technical and structured products. India sits in between, with a big domestic cotton and textile base that helps on certain fabric-led products.

Product strengths

CountryStrongest inLess ideal for
BangladeshKnitwear, t-shirts, polos, sweatshirts, basics, high-volume programmes, denimVery small runs, highly complex technical pieces
VietnamActivewear, outerwear, technical & structured garments, efficient mid-large runsLowest-cost basics; small-batch fashion
IndiaCotton, prints, embroidery & embellishment, design-rich fashion, smaller runsUltra-high-volume consistency at lowest cost

Capacity & scale

Bangladesh’s RMG sector is vast and concentrated, with thousands of factories geared to large, repeatable orders — ideal when you need hundreds of thousands of units to a consistent standard. Vietnam’s capacity is substantial and highly efficient but runs hotter on demand, which can affect pricing and slots. India’s capacity is huge but more fragmented across regions and specialisms.

Compliance & sustainability

This is where perceptions lag reality. Since 2013, Bangladesh has completed one of the most intensive factory-safety and compliance transformations in global manufacturing, and today has a deep base of audited, certified factories — including the world’s largest number of LEED-certified green garment factories. For EU and US brands facing due-diligence rules, that documented compliance base is a real asset. Vietnam and India both have strong compliant factories too; in all three countries, the key is choosing the right factory, not the country in the abstract.

The nuance that matters

“Compliance risk” is a factory-level question, not a country-level one. Every one of these countries has excellent compliant factories and weak ones. Your supplier’s vetting process matters more than the flag on the label.

Lead times & logistics

All three ship to the EU and US primarily by sea. Bangladesh exports FOB Chittagong with sea freight to Europe typically in the 25–35 day range; Vietnam and India have comparable ocean transit windows to Western markets. Production lead times are more about factory loading and product complexity than country, generally landing in the 60–90 day range for bulk.

So which should you choose?

Match the country to the product, not the other way around:

  • High-volume knitwear, basics, value programmes → Bangladesh is hard to beat.
  • Activewear, outerwear, technical construction → Vietnam is a natural fit.
  • Cotton, prints, embellishment, design-led smaller runs → India shines.
  • A varied range → consider dual-sourcing, placing each product where it’s made best.

The bottom line

There’s no single winner — there’s a best fit per product. Bangladesh leads on value, knitwear and high-volume compliance-ready production; Vietnam on technical and efficiency; India on cotton, print and design richness. A good sourcing partner helps you use the right one for each style, rather than forcing your whole range through one door.
